Long journey to spinning alpaca

cleaning alpaca fibre, dirty alpaca

Holy smokes, batman! Washing, rinsing, drying, shaking, fluffing, teasing and I still have “particles” in the alpaca fleece. And it’s no where near the spinning wheel.
If I wanted to guess when this lovely process will be finished, it could be another month. I had NO idea how much work it was to clean two beautiful bags of soft, but oh… so… dirty alpaca fleece. Next spring, I’m going to find out if those two lovelies can be brushed before I get their fiber.
I have visions of alpaca poop particles zipping through my house ducting and I’m not so happy with that vision. It’s too cold outside to clean this loverly fiber, so I’ve been trying to do it in the kitchen sink, and drying it over the heat register in the laundry room. Ewww. Not so sure about all this. Now I know why people send their fleece to a mill to have it cleaned.
Anyhow, I’m still at it: between Christmas, visitors, work, the cold weather, other hobbies (as one can see)and an ill friend, I am determined to get through these bags of straw-laden alpaca treasure.

Hours of cleaning and more to go...

I figured I had better pick up a drawing utensil fairly soon, or I might forget how to draw. I received a big hug from Anna’s daddy, so I think it must look like her. It was fun to draw that day, since I’ve been waiting a while to get some inspiration to “get at it” again.

Shabby, but sweet

I wanted a shabby chic clock, but I could not find one, so I picked up an ugly green plastic one at VV and painted it in my fav antique white. $3. It’s for the guest room and it has a door with a place to store our guests’ keys. Ta Da!

cowl, easy to make, knit, neck warmer

These were my first two knitting projects and I love them. They are cozy, lightweight, and very, very warm. Cast on 17-20 stitches of a chunky yarn. My fav is Lion’s Brand thick and quick. 25% wool, and 75% acrylic. Knit until the neck warmer is 22-25 inches long. Cast off, and attach 3 large buttons. One doesn’t even need to make buttonholes! Such a great beginner’s project.

18 stitches by 23 inches long. EASY!

This one is a bit too deep.

Crochet. I’m liking it. Simple stuff and very forgiving when you make all those beginner mistakes. Actually, I LOVE the pedicure socks. I’ve made tons for yoga and as boot socks(so one can wiggle toes.) I invented this pattern until I saw that others have also invented it. “Sigh.” I made them because I didn’t know how to do the heel, but what a great mistake.
Chain on 11+ stitches. Turn. *Single crochet and add one chain. Turn.* Repeat **. Do this until the strip fits comfortably around your foot. About 1 inch. Slip stitch together so it looks like a bracelet. Add 2-3 bands of sc. Chain 17 and attach the chain to the exact opposite side. Now it looks like a bottomless Easter basket. Single crochet until the length of your new loop is about 3+ inches. Done! Yea! Congrats.

Pedicure socks

Not so pretty

orchid blooms, orchids

Well, what do you know?! My orchids have all woken up, and are throwing out pretty liitle blooms. Right in the middle of winter. And there are more coming. The catts are slowly budding inside their envelopes of lime green leaves.

Easy Knitting and Crocheting ProjectsSo I’ve been experimenting with a few different yarns and patterns of simple, simple projects for the newbie that I am.
I am painfully slow, and the sequencing of knitting is quite difficult for me, so I think I’ll call myself a free-form knitter. Anyhew…..these two little projects were fun and they look ok despite the errors.

It is so simple….Cast on 24 stitches for size 7 hands with chunky yarn. Knit 2, purl 2 for 8ish rows. Stocking stitch for 3″ or so. Finish with knit 2, purl 2, and cast off by knitting and purling off each pair of stitches. Slip stitch sides to accommodate your thumb. I just kept at it until the width and length fit my hand. Like I said,” Free-form.”
